  • "Romeo and Juliet Theme"
  • Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon"
  • Norah Jones "Come Away With Me"
  • Eric Clapton's "You Look Wonderful Tonight"
  • Elvis Presley "Can't Help Falling In Love" and so many other popular Elvis songs including "Love Me Tender"
  • Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable"
  • Phil Collin's "Groovy Kind of Love"
  • "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You"
  • "It Had To Be You"

  • "Praise You"
  • "Loving You"

  • Sarah McLachlan's "I Love You"

You might pick your song from a memory the two of you have attached to the song. It might have been on the radio or at the club when you first kissed, or it might have been playing when he proposed? Before you choose it for your first dance as a married couple remember to listen to the words of the song. If it is a song that is less known it might be a good idea to ask your MC to explain the story why you choose the song while the bride and groom are walking out onto the dance floor.

Lyrics and Meanings of Love Songs for Weddings and Bridal Waltz

Research the history of the song you've chosen and remember to read the lyrics to check their meaning."You say it best when you say nothing at all ", is not a wholly romantic lyric to some brides that like to talk and would find it possibly sending a message to Be Quiet! Roberta Flack's "First time ever I saw your face" , and Savage Garden's "I knew I loved you before I met you" only work if the married couple fell in love at first sight and were not platonic friends for years first.

Wedding Dance Song Length

Much like keeping your wedding speeches short and entertaining you should also think about how long the song is. Your guests interest can be held for 3 minutes easily, however if you pick the remix version that goes for 7 minutes your guests may get a bit squirmy in their seats and a bit chatty.

Bridal Party Dance and Mother of the Groom and Father of the Bride Dance

Think about when you want your bridal party to join in, and when your parents will join the dance floor. If you have choreographed the first dance for just the two of you, then you will need to pick a following song that will allow the bride to dance with her father and the groom with his mother etc. Either let your band or DJ pick the music, or set out a track list to keep your guests on the dance floor. Music for the second dance includes Anne Murray's "Can I have this dance"; "My Baby Just Cares For You" by Nina Simone; one of many Van Morrison songs including "Wonderful Remark", "Have I Told You Lately", "Someone Like You", "Moondance".

Although Israel Kamakawiwo's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is popular at weddings, used in the ceremony or the reception it is also popular at funerals, be aware that it might bring up other memories for some of your guests.

"The Way You Looked Tonight" can be used as both the bridal dance and the dance with the Mother of the Groom and Father of the Bride. Another popular song, more for the Father of the Bride, "My Girl " by The Temptations. "Memories", "Isn't She Lovely", "Beautiful Day", "Days Like This", "You Look Wonderful Tonight" and The Beatles' "In My Life".

Wedding Dance Lessons for the Bride, Groom and Bridal Party

If either the groom or bride has two left feet you can spend some quality time together in the lead up to your wedding by taking some dance lessons. It is a skill that you'll be able to use at weddings, parties and balls long into your future together. Invite your bridal party along if they are interested (this is also a good idea to give as a bridal party gift). They can then join in your first dance towards the end, followed by the parents of the bride and groom. The music and the speed of the song you pick will be important to what steps you choose. If you are having dance lessons the instructor can help to choreograph the dance to that song. The tempo of the song may need to be sped up to suit the dance steps. A traditional waltz is in 3/4 time, however many songs do not fit this beat. It is also a good idea to practice your dance wearing your wedding shoes. Closer to the event the bride should practice in a skirt as full as the wedding dress (or as tight depending on the style). The bride may wish to wear different shoes during the dance if it is a quicker number.

When during the reception to have the Bridal Dance?

When you have your dance during your reception helps keep the formalities of the evening moving along in an orderly fashion. Most weddings have the bridal waltz after the speeches and cutting of the cake. This then sets up the dance floor as the place the guests will spend the end of their night. However, performing the dance after the bride and groom enter the reception is gaining in popularity. This can help set up a mood of fun, relaxed dancing for the evening if you want your guests to be more active than sitting at their tables eating. This works well for a cocktail wedding.
