Engagement Gifts
There is traditionally not a registry for engagement gifts. You might get cunning and call the couple's parents to find out if they have a list by the phone. This is common, but you might get the same gift as other people as you don't then cross if off the registry after purchase.
If the couple live together and already have some specific themes and colour choices throughout their house then think about this when picking your gift. If you are unsure if the couple have something already you can give a gift card or voucher instead. Otherwise, and this is very handy when purchasing a book, the store may gift you an exchange certificate so you don't have to include the receipt with the gift.
If they are just moving out together after their engagement then you can be fairly sure the couple will need a lot of household items, and in greater volume than they may have had living alone.
Popular Engagement Gifts
- Quality wine glasses.
They do not have to be crystal (and bulky), but they should be of a higher quality than the couple would pick up from a local market.
- Photo frames.
If the couple have a set colour theme for frames try to pick frames that will match that frame family, otherwise choose thoughtfully. The couple will be having many events worthy of framing photos from in coming months, including the engagement party. If you have a photo of the couple, have that printed to the size of the frame. You don't have to take the frame out of the wrapping in case it needs to be exchanged, but it will be nice for the couple to have something to hang up straightaway, without havign to find a good photo and have it printed.
- Photo Album.
An added gift can be if you send the engaged couple printed photos from the engagement party that they can include in the album.
- Kettle or other appliance with a difference.
Kitchen designers have brought colour and character into many appliances today, so why not give this gift to your guests. Morphy Richards, Breville and KitchenAid are some of the brands to pick from. This can add a splash of colour to a kitchen. Also, if the couple have just moved out they may not have thought about colour and style so much as budget on some of the essential kitchen appliances.
- Movie tickets.
If the engaged couple are having a wedding soon after their engagement they may not put dating as a priority during their planning phase, however it is important they continue to have fun. Going out to the movies is a nice gift. Include a voucher for the candy bar, or a bag of Jaffas for a bit of fun.
- Vase.
Vases are beautiful and they hold beautiful flowers. The couple can remember you and your gift, and their engagement party every time they bring out the vase for a enw bunch of flowers. As an added touch, give a bunch of flowers with the vase, or send a bunch of flowers to the bride-to-be a month after the party to put in her new vase. Receiving delivered flowers is always a nice surprise and will surely secure your invite to the wedding?
- Cookbook.
A couple can never have too many cookbooks. Some popular titles and authors are Stephanie Alexander (Cook's Companion)
, Neil Perry, Bill Granger, Jamie Oliver, Donna Hay and the staple of every kitchen, The Australian Women's Weekly Cookbooks.
