Something old, new, borrowed, blue and a sixpence

Something old
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue,
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

A saying dating back to older times, kept going by many brides today.

Old

can represent something from the bride’s family past. Ideas for this include wearing an heirloom piece of jewellery (broach, ring, earrings, necklace, etc), or using a family bible in the ceremony.

New

represents the bride and groom’s new life and happiness together. Items can include anything purchased specifically for the wedding: dress, shoes, lingerie, veil, hairpiece, jewellery.

Borrowed

represents the help that the bride can call on from friends and family throughout her married life. Part of this tradition is for the item to be returned to its owner after the wedding. Items commonly borrowed include the veil, an heirloom piece of jewellery or handkerchief, garter, wedding dress.

Blue

represents good characteristics in a marriage, loyalty and faithfulness. This is usually something the bride wears underneath her clothing, including the garter or lingerie. The something blue could also be a piece of jewellery, possibly blue topaz necklace or ring, or a blue Swarovski crystal.

Silver sixpence

(hard to find now-a-days) represents future wealth. It can also be replaced by a note or modern day coin depending on the bride’s comfort and tolerance level.
