Caring for your flowers - Keep Your Flowers Blooming Healthy
Tips to caring for flowers you receive :
A typical bunch of flowers should last between 4-7 days. To make sure your flowers last this long, if not longer there is some helpful advice to follow. If you don't receive flowers very regularly you want to keep the ones you receive.
- Make sure your vase is clean and has clean water. Warmer water is better for most flowers (tulips and daffodils like colder water). Lukewarm water can encourage flower buds to open. A clean vase means less bacteria to clog up the flower stem and prevent water uptake.
- Cut about 3cm or an inch off each flower stem before placing them in a vase to freshen the stem and allow as much water uptake as possible from the start.
- Remove all leaves below the water level in the vase to keep the water clean.
- Use flower food/flower care solution . This type of food will prevent bacteria in the water that again will stunt your flower's life.
- Keep your flowers in a place that isn't too hot or cold. Keep your flowers away from heating and cooling vents and away from direct sunlight. It may seem odd, but try and keep them away from the TV, the heat from a TV can dehydrate your flowers.
- Cut flower stems at an angle to allow greater surface area to drink up the water. Always try to use very sharp scissors to cut your flowers.
- Remove dead/dying flowers from the vase.
- Now that your flowers are lasting longer you will need to top up the vase water and care solution.
If you receive flowers, or buy them and don't have the opportunity to take the above steps straight away to make sure your flowers stay healthy wrap some wet paper around the open stems to keep them damp. Keep the flowers in a cool place.
Remember when buying flowers to choose a bunch with buds that show enough colour to indicate healthy potential, and bloomed flowers with firm petals.
