  1. Sleep, relax, look after yourself and your baby .
Studies have recently found how beneficial bed rest, relaxation and classical music can be on pregnant women and their babies. Listening to music while pregnant can also help the baby to soothe themselves to sleep after birth too. So a nanna-nap, an early night, or a day off work is an excellent thing in the months leading up to your baby's birth.
  2. Enjoy some "you time" .
If this is your first baby, or even if it is your fifth baby, a newborn changes the dynamics of your life. Remember to savour the time you have before the birth. Be it in the way of going to the movies, sleeping in, staying at a hotel (it is a new-chic thing to book in to a hotel room for a pre-birth fling with your partner), or walking through your favourite gallery without a pram.
  3. Read, but don't over do it .
As mentioned with new mum's advice, read up for some helpful tips, but don't spend all day reading blogs and magazines and articles trying to prepare for parenthood, you can't know everything . When you find yourself reading too much, refer to rule 1 and relax.
  4. Wash baby clothes are you receive them.
If your friends give you clothing and baby wraps for baby showers and as pre-birth gifts remember to wash them before the birth. Then you will have the clothing ready for the baby when you get home.
  5. Buy some maternity clothing
You don't need to update your whole wardrobe, but it will make going to work, or out to visit friends, easier if you have some clothes that will "grow" with you. Stay away with some classic pieces that may also be wearable after the birth (unfortunately the body does not magically go back to it's pre-baby shape straight after birth).
  6. Have some baby names prepared
Even if you know the sex of your baby, have a few names for either gender ready, just in case. In the weeks before the birth map out your family tree, just to see if there are any family names you might want to incorporate into your baby's name. Don't talk too much with other people about the names you are thinking about. They may inadvertently say something negative that sways your thinking. People will love the name after the birth, don't try and gauge people's reactions before the birth. Do check with family members if you are choosing a family name for one side and not the other, so as to ward off any family rivalry in the hospital.
  7. Enjoy nesting
  8. Let other people plan your baby shower.
Just because you are not working doesn't mean you are free to organise the invitations, food and games for a baby shower. Let someone else organise it and "turn up" on the day and enjoy the festivities.
  9. Organise a cleaner if you can.
If you can afford a cleaner before the birth then splurge and get your bathrooms scrubbed and your kitchen gleaming before you head in to hospital. This helps in the first days after you arrive home and there are visitors on your doorstep seemingly round the clock.
