Especially if this is the first baby, helpful what-to-expect in pregnancy and beyond are very helpful for the new mum. Up The Duff
: The Real Guide to Pregnancy
by Kaz Cooke is a popular book for pregnant women (and their partners) to help them understand what is going on week-to-week. The book is broken up by trimester and month and the advice within is very honest, and amusing. Anything that brings a smile or a laugh to a pregnant woman during her morning sickness is a blessing. And a gift that provides comforting advice and reassurance of things "being right" is appreciated too. Kaz Cooke's book has recently been revised and a new edition is on the market. For after the birth Kaz Cooke has also written Kidwrangling: the Real Guide to Caring for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers.

Dr Seuss's Oh, The Places You'll Go
This book deals with the joys and challenges and adventures life throws at you. This book is comforting to read to your unborn child while you imagine the life they may live. This is also a popular graduation gift. I keep a copy of this book in my emergency gifts
box and either send it out in the post, or deliver it in person when I'm congratulating a newly pregnant friend. If they fall through the gaps then it is always a gift I include with my congratulations gift hamper when the baby is born. The book, like all Dr Seuss books, has a wonderful rhythm to read with and is long enough (hopefully) to lull the baby off to sleep.

Music to relax
the mum-to-be and her baby
Music from artists like Norah Jones, Joshua Radin, Jason Marz, Katy Perry, Lily Allen. Classical music is also soothing for both the mum-to-be and the baby. Although there is no research to prove classical music can improve a baby's intelligence, there has been research to show that classical music can reduce anxiety in pregnancy and it can help to soothe a baby in the womb and after birth. The same calming music the mum-to-be listens to while relaxing during pregnancy can then be played to help soothe a baby after a tantrum, or rock them to sleep for years after birth.
