Baby Shower Food

Plan your food for a baby shower with reference to the baby shower theme, and the mum-to-be's likes. Also remember that when catering a baby shower you must keep in mind what the mum-to-be and any other pregnant or breastfeeding guests can and cannot eat. Don't focus on what you can't do though, get creative with what you can do.

Try and offer some healthy options including vegetables and fruit platters. Fun foods for all guests to enjoy include fruit kebabs, sandwiches, tartlets. and scones.

Popular baby shower foods:

  • Cupcakes. Decorate with the baby shower theme in mind, or ice in pinks and blues. Or decorate with mini baby rattles and other novelties from a cake decorating shop.
  • Sandwiches. Cucumber sandwiches are perfect to add to a high tea or Devonshire tea themed party. Sandwiches are easy to make on the day, or order from your local bakery.
  • Pies and sausage rolls . These are easy to make the day before, or purchase from your local deli or supermarket. These are always welcomed by the younger guests.

Drinks to offer at your baby shower:

Fruit punch and mocktails . Avoid having the mum-to-be and her pregnant and breastfeeding friends feel left out from an alcoholic drink. Offer a fruit juice punch, or mocktail to toast the mum-to-be without with. Making a tasty and decorative punch or mocktail is an enjoyable drink for everyone from the young guests to your Nanna.

Tea party . Purchase pregnant women friendly herbal teas. Include an urn. make chilled teas and warm fruit and herb teas. This is wonderful along with scones, jam and optional cream for Devonshire Tea. Scones are a budget-friendly sweet to serve, and easy to bake on the morning of the party.

Foods to avoid including in your baby shower catering

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to stay away from a lot of foods including:

  • soft cheese including Brie, Camembert, soft blue cheeses and goats' cheese (chevre).
  • cold meat cuts
  • softserve icecream
  • caffeine
  • pate
  • raw or partially cooked eggs
  • some types of fish
  • possibly nuts
  • breastfeeding women may prefer to avoid garlic, chili and ginger.
